Boating and Fishing

  • Appalachian Outfitters - the "one stop" shop to support everything you may need for your fishing, biking and kayaking needs. They are an Orvis dealer. They can provide fly fishing lessons, fly tying classes, guided trips, hiking etc. Give Ron or Kathryn Jenkins a call (828-837-4165) for personalized service. They are conveniently located in downtown Murphy.
  • Duke's Hideaway Marina on Hiawassee Lake - 555 Duke Lodge Rd Murphy, NC 28906, 828-835-3332 Give Mike a call to rent a pontoon boat, launch your own boat and enjoy the coves and beaches of Hiawassee Lake.
  • Hiwassee Lake and River - The National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame lists a record catch of a 54-pound striped bass from Lake Hiwassee. Other fish within the reservoirs include bluegill, yellow perch and muskie.

Golf

  • Chatuge Shores Golf Course - 13 miles from the Woods

John C. Campbell Folk School

  • John C. Campbell Folk School - Spend a week and learn creative folk art. A unique opportunity to peek into the past and become a part of it.
Local Restaurants that we love

  • Doyles Cedar Hill Restaurant An eclectic mix of contemporary Southern, international, traditional, and vegetarian dishes are available at this fine dining restaurant that also features a terrific wine list and a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. The pan seared filet is outstanding. Their Tiki Bar features outside seating and nightly live music.  It is Murphy's "Cheers".
  • ShoeBooties - In our opinion, a must see for any visitor to The Woods. A very eclectic menu with great specials. Now serving from a full bar above the main restaurant. Ya gotta try it.
  • Murphy Chop House - One of the newer restaurants in Murphy. The chef is an award winner who has raised the bar in Murphy. Reservations are recommended.
  • Cucina Rustica - The finest Italian restaurant in the surrounding area - bar none. A real, wood fired brick oven and cuisine prepared from the finest ingredients. John and Isabella provide personal service you will not forget.
  • Waffle King - Waffle King you say??? Yes. Don't be fooled. This is a locally owned and operated franchise. Rick and Christie extend the type of small town hospitality and quality food that you will love. Open 24 hours. You will get a discount coupon at check-in.
  • Burger Boy - 1504 Andrews Road, Murphy - A small diner that caters to locals. Some of the best burgers in town. Hand formed when you order it. Bargain prices.
  • Monte Alban - 865 US Hwy 64, Murphy - Coming from SoCal, Mexican food is a passion for us. This locally owned, multi-location chain is almost as good as those small cantinas in L.A. The salsa is a little mild for us.
  • Rib Country - 2121 US Hwy 64 West, Murphy - We call it "da pig place". Some of the best BBQ we have sampled in the area. It's another local chain that just plain gets it right.  Great folk art on the walls.
  • Daily Grind and Wine - 46 Valley River Ave. Murphy - a great coffee/bar serving great sandwiches, fine wines and draft beers. Features live periodic entertainment.

Antiquing - We are surrounded by shops but here are some quick leads
  • Murphy - about 10 minutes away
  • Blairsville, GA - about 10 minutes away
  • Blue Ridge, GA - about 30 minutes away
  • Hiawasee, GA - about 30 minutes away

Motorcycle and Automobile Touring

  • Deals Gap and The Tail of the Dragon - a must see for any serious auto tourer or biker. This site provides the most comprehensive guide to the roads in the area.  There is no need to look any further.
  • The Upper Tellico ORV Area - Unfortunately, the trails have been closed. It has been determined that the headwaters of the Tellico river were being disrupted by the traffic on the trails. The native trout population was being drastically affected. This closure is until further notice.

Other Interesting Locations

  • Helen, GA. A Bavarian village set in the N. GA. mountains, about 30 minutes from The Woods. - Be prepared for polka music.
  • Blue Ridge, GA. - Neat village with a lot of quaint shops and places to explore.
  • Waterfalls - follow this link to locate waterfalls in North Carolina. This site just gives general locations.

Staying at the Woods gives you the opportunity to unwind and relax. With 26 acres of forest, vineyard and pasture to wander, you would never have to leave the property to be happy. You walk the nature trails, visit our gazebo overlooking our creek-fed ponds, toss horseshoes, play croquet, practice your putting, watch the rich assortment of native wildlife, watch tapes or DVD's from our free library, soak in the hot tub or just veg out.
